Influenza A(H1N1) / swine flu
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its Pandemic Threat Alert Phase to Level 6. If you are concerned about the outbreak of swine flu, please read the information provided by the FCO . In particular, the section headed “British nationals overseas”.
The Government of India has introduced surveillance measures at International Airports. On arrival in India travellers from affected countries (including the UK) should be prepared to be asked questions or be checked for symptoms by medical staff. Travellers suspected of having H1N1 will be admitted to designated government hospitals for compulsory quarantine, testing and treatment. Travellers should be aware that transfer from a government hospital to a more modern and better equipped private facility may not be permitted for those with suspected or confirmed H1N1.
The British High Commission will not be able to offer diagnosis or medical treatment. You should assure yourself of your own healthcare arrangements and consult your healthcare provider before travelling to India. It would also be sensible for you to consider whether you have access to anti-viral drugs and appropriate medical facilities should a pandemic occur.
We have been informed that the anti-viral drug oseltamivir (e.g. Tamiflu) is not generally available for purchase in pharmacies in India. However, the Government of India is maintaining stockpiles of oseltamivir for distribution through the Public Health Network in the case of confirmed cases of the disease. If you wish to purchase alternative anti-viral drugs, you should speak to your pharmacist or GP.
British nationals working in India should therefore speak to their employers about the contingency plans they have in place for a flu pandemic. Such plans may include access to antiviral treatment for employees and/or repatriation to the UK. You should note that in the event of a pandemic, we have concluded that given the potential number of British nationals involved we will be unable to offer repatriation.
