- Dr. Ramasami's visit to UK
SIN arranged a short visit of Dr Ramasami (Head of Department of Science and Technology) to the UK. Dr Ramasami had a timely and productive meeting with UK Government Chief Scientist in which they made significant progress towards the 2009 India-UK Science and Innovation Council, including agreement on key themes and the planning process.
- Joint agreement on selling UK's Hydrogen fuelling product in India
An agreement between UK's RE Hydrogen Ltd and India's Society of Indian Manufacturers (SIAM) was signed as a result of a series of activities on Fuel cells facilitated by SIN's identification of key partners to involve in the activity. SIAM has agreed to provide advice to the UK company's collaborative projects in India and to introduce their product to the Indian manufacturers for potential commercial exploitation.
- Indo-UK Cyber Security Working Group launched
SIN organised a Cyber Security Mission to India in March 2009 to explore opportunities for collaboration between India and the UK in the areas of IT security. As a direct result of this activity the Indo-UK Cyber Security Working Group, led by Dr M Rajarajan at City University, was launched at a conference on Information Security in May 2009. The Working Group aims to bring academia across different disciplines (social sciences, economics, computing, arts and humanities and engineering), industry and policy-makers from the UK and India together on a single platform to collaborate and cooperate in the area of cyber security. Prof. Ross Anderson (Cambridge University), Prof. Fred Piper (University of Royal Holloway), Prof. N Balakrishnan (Indian Institute of Science), Prof. Rajat Moona (Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur), Infosys Technologies and BT are members of the working group.
- Solar delegation from the UK
SIN played a significant role in shaping and delivering EPSRC-DST's joint £10 million solar initiative. SIN was involved in several activities associated with this initiative, providing the background intelligence on the solar scenario in India and the information about leading research institutes, researchers and business organisations working in solar area that was pivotal to the success of the SIN-RCUK organised solar workshop in New Delhi in April this year. On the sidelines of the workshop, SIN organised a visit programme for 10 UK experts on Solar photovoltaics, including a programme designed to help two senior EPSRC delegates understand and engage with the work on Photovoltaics that is being undertaken at the National Physical Lab, TERI, Solar Energy Centre, Moser Baer and IIT Delhi.
- BioPharm 2020 Science Bridge
SIN Bangalore organised and attended visits for Professor Kevin Shakesheff from Nottingham University, Principal Investigator of the RCUK-DST Science Bridge award, in June 2009. As a result of these meetings BioPharm 2020 has been able to develop a strategy for its industrial engagement in India that includes plans for a joint business plan competition with the Association of Biotech Led Enterprises in Bangalore.
- Visit of Prof Neva Haites,University of Aberdeen
Science and Innovation network (SIN) India has worked closely with the University of Aberdeen to plan a series of visits to Research Institutes in India by the Vice Principal in charge of Life Science and Innovation. As a result of this fact finding visit collaborative research links are in the process of being established. Areas of current discussion include research in the area of Maternal Mortality measurement and intervention programs for improving the rate and Professional Development courses jointly offered with Indian and Aberdeen colleagues. Other areas for possible collaboration with Medical Scientists are currently being explored.
