This was Dr John Reid's first visit to the country as the UK Defence Minister. The visit acknowledged the growing importance of the relationship between the UK and India, politically, militarily and economically.

British Prime Minister
British Prime Minister Rt Hon Tony Blair MP was in India from 6-8 September 2005. The first day (September 7) of the visit focussed on Indian-EU partnerships while September 8 was more bilateral. The Prime Minister also launched CNBC India Business Awards and India-UK Education Initiative.

Alan Johnson visited India from 6-8 September 2005 with Prime Minister Tony Blair. He attended and addressed the EU-India Business Summit in New Delhi. Mr Johnson was accompanied by about 30 senior UK business people who are keen to substantially increase their business with India.

Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education
Bill Rammell visited India to enhance bilateral ties and to explore possibilities for bilateral cooperation in the field of higher education. The visit offered a valuable opportunity to shape the joint higher education initiative that India and the UK are working towards agreeing later this year.

Minister for Culture, Media and Sport
Tessa Jowell visited India from 28 - 30 March 2005 to enhance bilateral ties and to create awareness of the UK's bid to host 2012 Olympic games. This was her third visit to India. Ms Jowell called on Shri Jaipal Reddy, Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Culture and Shri Sunil Dutt, Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports. She also met members of the Indian Olympic Association.

The British Foreign Minister visited India from 16-18 February. He travelled to Amritsar and New Delhi. In Amritsar Straw visited the Golden Temple and paid his respects at Jallianwala Bagh. In Delhi he met with Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil to renew his friendship with them.

Lord Bach of Lutterworth, led the British delegation to the fifth Aero India aerospace exposition at Bangalore. Over 20 UK companies took part in this show, which is among the largest of its kind in the region and increasingly important globally.
